The Fool's Journey

My Current work deals with the cycle of creation and decay. Each painting is painted over layers of underpainting, dissolved in solvent washes and separated by layers of clear resin.

As each layer is covered over a memory of it still transmits, (although sometimes just barely) to the final layer. These images for me speak to the longing for substance and permanence even with the knowledge that everything is temporary.

This struggle to want to hold on, while having to let go has been a constant struggle in my life path, and this process is in part a meditation and attempt to find meaning and peace within the chaos.

Each painting begins kind of like a tarot card reading, I focus on a question or pressing feeling and use that as my foundation and is the first layer. This foundation is usually a line drawing in drypoint or a bright spot of color and in the parlance of tarot represents the fool, or the self in their simple most naive state.

The next layers are left to chance, by doing multiple solvent washes and then going back into the washes to dissolve them further. This allows for for an element of random chance which in turn begins to inform my thought about the final layer.

The final layer is populated by a single iconic image, which I think of in tarot terms as my Major Arcana. They are mostly tricksters and sprites and to me represent the fool's evelotion, growth and trancendence through the journey.

I hope you enjoy the work!

I have always been fascinated by old photographs, bizarre relics and religious iconography, which has in turn spawned an interest in anachronistic technology and the world of make believe. These are my major influences and perhaps what got me hooked on Intaglio printmaking, which has been a passion of mine for about five years. Lately I have also found major inspiration in the traditional forms of decoration and iconography of Japan and China, which stems from working in close

contact with both tattoo artists as well as with local artist who's work has greatly informed mine.

I received my BA from The Evergreen State College, where my focus was sustainable agriculture, but where I also studied lithography as well as independent art study. While there I also worked as a cartoonist for the Cooper Point Journal, a student newspaper, and as a part time illustrator for the city of Olympia, Thurston County Parks and Recreation.

Professionally I have been lucky enough to work at Trillium Graphics, a Fine Art printmaking studio and publisher, for over five years as registrar, web designer/administrator, production assistant and collaborative printmaker.
